Manager's View: 'It's Been Coming' - Devine Hails Team Spirit as Stars Shine in Seven-Goal Glentoran Victory

Glentoran's Dominant Performance Against Carrick

Glentoran delivered a commanding performance against Carrick, with Reece Glendinning being sent off within the first half-hour. This allowed Hoban to score the opening two goals, while Liam Burt added to the tally in the second half.

Manager's Verdict: A Strong Showing

Glentoran manager Declan Devine shared his thoughts on the match, highlighting the team's overall performance:

"From the start of the season, we've been threatening to score a few goals in many games. We've been wasteful in front of goal on several occasions, but today I felt that even when it was 11 v 11, a couple of goals up, there was more to come. We were really dominant in our play."

Devine praised the team's aggressive approach and the effectiveness of their system. "Pat (Hoban) will obviously get the headlines – he scored six goals in a 50-minute game, which was something special. But Ryan Cooney was the first to tell me that he had six assists, which was incredible as well."

The manager also acknowledged the team's recent success, stating, "We had a four-game winning streak, especially against good teams like Coleraine, Larne, and Portadown, and a tough venue here in Carrick. That's a testament to the players' commitment and effort during the Christmas period."

Devine emphasized the sacrifices made by the players over the holidays. "We prepared, we recovered, and our attitude to getting the three points was key. Even today, we never looked past the difficult conditions or the tough team Carrick."

He also expressed his delight for the players and their families. "It gives us a good platform to build for the start of 2026."

Pat Hoban's Remarkable Six-Goal Display

Devine spoke about Hoban's impressive performance, noting, "Not surprised one bit...you give him the ammunition, you give him the service, he'll score goals."

Beyond his goal-scoring ability, Hoban's contributions on a daily basis are significant. "People don't see the standards he sets. He's working with 'JJ' (Jordan Jenkins), he's working with (Nathaniel) Ferris, and he's helping all the young players at the club."

Devine highlighted Hoban's discipline and dedication. "He's been the most successful person at our club at the moment. The levels he's played at – Champions League groups, Top Goalscorer, Player of the Year – he's an outstanding individual."

He also mentioned the challenge given to Hoban at half-time. "We challenged him to not just accept the four goals and to go out and score the two that he did in the second half. His headers, link-up play, and movement were second-to-none."

Devine concluded, "His reading of where the ball is going to go and his knowledge of how to use his body well are fantastic. As I say, his record speaks for itself, but we want him to set new records here now and help us push on to another level."
