China's Largest Electric SUV Shuns Drivers

Nio is set to introduce a new electric SUV that promises to redefine luxury and space in the Chinese market. The ES9, the brand’s largest model to date, is designed for those who value comfort and status as much as performance. With its impressive dimensions and advanced features, the ES9 is positioned to cater to both affluent buyers and larger families.

Big Numbers, Bigger Presence

The Nio ES9 stands out with its impressive size, making it the largest electric SUV in China. According to CarNewsChina, the vehicle measures 5,365 mm (211.2 inches) in length, 2,029 mm (79.8 inches) in width, and 1,870 mm (73.6 inches) in height. This makes it significantly larger than the ES8, with an increase of 85 mm (3.3 inches) in length, 29 mm (1.1 inches) in width, and 70 mm (2.7 inches) in height.

More importantly, the ES9 boasts a wheelbase of 3,250 mm (127.9 inches), which is 120 mm (4.7 inches) longer than the ES8. This extended wheelbase translates into more legroom and a more spacious interior for passengers. In terms of footprint, the ES9 falls between the standard Cadillac Escalade and the extended-wheelbase Escalade ESV, highlighting its commanding presence on the road.

Visually Striking Design

Visually, the ES9 shares similarities with its smaller sibling, the ES8, but it has a more upright and squared front fascia. The design includes split DRLs and headlights at the front, along with a large grille and a ribbon of black along the bottom of the bumper. Like the ES8, the ES9 also features a LiDAR protruding from the roof.

The rear design is more minimalist, featuring a single LED light bar and little else of interest. Additional photos reveal that retractable side steps will be available, as well as at least six different wheel designs/finishes. Buyers will also have the option of choosing between black or silver accents running along the body.

Dual-Motor Drive

While the cabin details of the ES9 are still under wraps, the powertrain specifications are already clear. The ES9 will be powered by a 241 hp (177 kW) electric motor at the front axle and a 456 hp (335 kW) motor at the rear axle. Together, these motors deliver a combined output of 697 hp (513 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. The battery pack, sourced from CATL, is expected to have a capacity of 102 kWh.

Although specific charging speeds have not been disclosed, Nio’s battery-swapping network offers a unique advantage. This network allows drivers to replace a depleted battery with a fully charged one in just three minutes, eliminating the need for long charging sessions.

Future Plans and Availability

A full reveal of the ES9 is expected in the coming months, with a domestic launch planned shortly after. However, availability in markets outside China has not yet been confirmed. As Nio continues to expand its lineup, the ES9 represents a significant step forward in the brand's commitment to providing luxurious and spacious electric vehicles for discerning customers.
