Nuno Calls Wolves Defeat His Worst Career Loss

A Disheartening Defeat for West Ham
West Ham United's manager, Nuno Espirito Santo, expressed deep embarrassment following a 3-0 loss to Wolverhampton Wanderers, a result that has intensified the Hammers' relegation concerns. The defeat at Molineux on Saturday saw Wolves, currently at the bottom of the Premier League, secure a well-deserved victory with first-half goals from Jhon Arias, Hwang Hee-chan, and Mateus Mane.
This loss left West Ham four points behind the safety zone in 18th place, marking what Nuno described as the worst performance of his career. The Portuguese manager, who was recently dismissed by Nottingham Forest this season, left the pitch immediately after the final whistle and is now under significant pressure following a nine-game winless streak.
Nuno stated: “I have to apologise to the fans. It was embarrassing. There’s not much I can say other than we are sorry. We are sorry because what we showed was not good enough. We need results, we need points. It is a tough situation and nobody expected this performance. Today was the worst performance that we have had.”
He added: “We needed much more from our players. The way we performed was very poor, it was embarrassing. I don’t recall one day that I felt so bad on a football pitch.”
Nuno took charge in September after Graham Potter's brief tenure and there are growing rumors that he could also be sacked. He emphasized that his focus is on improving the team's performance rather than his own future.
“I’ve known Robert for many, many years,” he said. “I have huge respect for him.”
Wolves’ manager Rob Edwards, who celebrated his first win in nine games, downplayed any tension with Nuno. “I’ve seen him now,” Edwards said. “We shook hands, so that’s all cool.”
Wolves’ Strong Performance
Wolves delivered a spirited performance, building on their recent draw against Manchester United. Arias opened the scoring just four minutes into the match, followed by Hwang’s penalty and 18-year-old Mane’s first senior goal, a stunning strike from the edge of the box. This put the result beyond doubt before halftime.
Edwards reflected on the win: “I feel good – probably a bit of relief and really pleased. It’s been a good day, so I’ll enjoy it, and we should enjoy it, but it’s only one win. That’s all it is.”
He continued: “We’re building, we’re progressing, we’re getting better but after a game of football, especially when it’s gone quite well, sometimes you can have a little bit of a flat feeling as well. There’s a bit of ‘Thank God for that’. I probably feel a little bit like that at the moment.”
Looking Ahead
With the pressure mounting on both managers, the coming weeks will be crucial for both teams. West Ham must find a way to turn their fortunes around, while Wolves aim to build on their recent success.
As the Premier League season continues, fans will be watching closely to see how these teams respond to the challenges ahead.
