Labour's Full List of 45 EV Grant-Eligible Cars

Expansion of Electric Vehicle Grants
The Labour Party government has announced the latest expansion of its Electric Car Grant, significantly increasing the number of eligible models available for the top discount. This move aims to make electric vehicles (EVs) more accessible and affordable for a broader range of drivers.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander highlighted the impact of the grant, stating: "Our Electric Car Grant has already supported over 40,000 drivers to choose electric, and this latest expansion doubles the number of models available for the top discount – putting thousands of pounds back in more families’ pockets."
She added that the government is committed to reducing the cost of EVs and improving charging infrastructure. "We’re doubling down on our drive to help people buy EVs, extending the grant to push down costs and boosting charging access with a further £200 million to expand the charging network across the UK."
New MOT Rule and Potential Changes for Older Drivers
In addition to the EV grants, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) is introducing a new '2 or 5 year' MOT rule from January. This change could affect drivers over 70, who may face a 'compulsory' test and potential ban if they fail to attend.
Impact on Consumer Interest
Ian Plummer, Chief Commercial Officer at Autotrader, the UK’s largest automotive marketplace, noted the positive effect of the grant on consumer interest. "The Electric Car Grant is helping to make electric cars more affordable for thousands of car buyers, which is vital if we are to accelerate the rate of adoption."
He pointed out that the number of people viewing grant-eligible models on Autotrader has increased by over 100% in some instances. "With the addition of these new models to the scheme, we will no doubt see similar levels of interest."
Plummer also praised the government's efforts to improve charging accessibility. "EVs enjoy significant running cost benefits, but only when the cars can be charged mainly on driveways or cheaper off-street locations, so this investment is vital to ensure no driver is left behind on the journey to electric."
Industry Reactions
Yselkla Farmer, CEO of BEAMA, expressed confidence in the grant's role in driving positive trends in new EV inquiries. "BEAMA’s latest market pulse shows that the Electric Car Grant is leading to positive trends in new EV inquiries to date," she said.
She added that the continued support of the grant by the government is a welcome measure, providing certainty and improving confidence for UK EV charge point manufacturers. "With more cars becoming eligible for the top level of the grant, the government’s ambitious ZEV mandate is becoming increasingly achievable."
