A Scenic Walk with a Rich History
The Chillerton Down walk on the Isle of Wight is a perfect blend of natural beauty and historical significance. Starting from a small lay-by off Berry Shute, the walk takes you up the down, along its spine, and back via tracks and lanes.
Starting the Journey
From the lay-by, join bridleway G13, making sure to ignore the path to the left and head towards the base of Chillerton Down. After passing through a gate, the path curves upwards along the right-hand side of a chalk pit. As you reach the top of the pit, continue straight uphill towards the skyline fence beside the mast of the transmitting station.
Exploring the Transmitting Station
Once you reach the perimeter fence of the transmitting station, turn right and follow the line of posts. A kissing gate sits near a boundary corner, and after passing through it, bear slightly left across open downland toward a small copse and fence corner. The wooden bench here offers one of the finest viewpoints of this section of the ridge.
Continue along the ridge until you reach another kissing gate, roughly 100 metres down the top field corner. Passing through this gate, begin the descent, which starts gently but soon becomes steeper as the path hugs the fence line and drops to the far lower corner of the field.
Navigating Through Gates and Paths
Go through the gate, turn left for 25 metres, and continue through a further kissing gate, following the path through a copse. Keep straight ahead on bridleway G8, moving around a field gate until you reach a crossing track. Turn left onto the track and follow it to a minor road before turning left again at Newbarn Farm to climb an uphill bridleway.
Bear right at the signpost for G22 Dunkem Down, then after a brief climb bear left just before the gate at the top. The gradient eases, and the path passes a dew pond on the right. These shallow, man-made basins were once vital watering points for livestock grazing the high ground.
Continuing Along the Ridge
Beyond the pond, a gate leads you into a quiet belt of conifers and another crossing track. Turn left and follow the exposed ridge-top bridleway signed N146 to Shorwell. As you approach the tall mast of the Chillerton Down Transmitting Station, views open out across the Island.
A Historical Landmark
Built in 1958, the transmitter originally served as the principal ITV broadcasting site for central and southern England. Its slim-line design was deliberately chosen to reduce visual impact on the landscape, and the mast is stabilised by 15 stay lines anchored into nine foundation blocks. The Island’s main TV transmission duties now fall to Rowridge, three miles away, with the Chillerton mast broadcasting FM and DAB radio.
Concluding the Walk
Continue on past the mast to reach its concrete and Tarmac access road. Cross the access road and pass through the gate opposite, with a sunken path leading you downwards straight before curling left. After passing through two final gates, the route rejoins your outward path, guiding you back to the Berry Shute lay-by.
