Just as youth vaping has become a significant issue in the United States, it is now emerging as a serious challenge in England. Schools across the country are witnessing a rise in vaping among middle and high school students, prompting a range of measures to address the problem.

According to a survey involving nearly 7,000 teachers, 52% of them see vaping as a problem in their schools. This number has decreased from 74% in a June 2024 poll, which may indicate that the measures being taken are having an effect or that student behavior has improved seasonally.
Despite this decline, the impact on teachers remains significant. Nearly 20% of schools have installed vape detectors, while 35% have hired extra staff for monitoring. Educators who spoke with the BBC noted that vape products are easily accessible to students and cause disruptions in the classroom.
The NASUWT teachers' union has described this disruption as a "public health emergency." Multiple educators have reported that students who vape exhibit addictive behaviors and struggle to maintain focus during lessons.
Why Is Youth Vaping in England Important?
The widespread use of vaping among young people in England is a cause for concern due to its potential long-term effects on health and education. Vaping can lead to nicotine addiction, increased smoking rates, and other harmful habits.
Dr. Mike McKean, vice president for policy at the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, expressed concerns about the unknown long-term consequences of vaping. "I often worry that the full effects are unlikely to be known for many years, and by the time the full adverse effects are apparent, it may be too late to reverse," he said in an interview with the BBC.
In the short term, schools are diverting valuable resources—both financial and human—to anti-vaping initiatives. They are also dealing with more distracted students, who may be absorbing less information due to their vaping habits.
What's Being Done About Youth Vaping in England?
The government is not waiting to take action against the youth vaping crisis. The upcoming Tobacco and Vapes Bill aims to restrict the marketing and sale of vapes to minors. This legislation is part of a broader effort to curb the rising trend of vaping among young people.
